Fear of saying the wrong thing, in an environment where Call-Out Culture is waiting to pounce on the slightest misstep. Fear of being accused of jumping on a bandwagon. Fear of being told that the work they’re doing is hollow and tokenistic. … So they’d rather stay quiet, and perhaps allow others to be the first to raise their heads above the parapet.

What I’ve called one of the hardest perfume articles I’ve ever written has just been published in the latest edition of The Perfume Society’s The Scented Letter. What made it so difficult to write? The fact that it aimed to tackle one of the thorniest, most complex subjects in the modern world: diversity and inclusivity. Indeed, the entire issue addresses some of the toughest challenges facing the perfume industry at the moment.

The Scented Letter is usually not available for free, but as its editors would like as many people as possible to read the new issue, they’ve made it accessible to all. I’d be really grateful if you could take the time to check it out — here’s a link: The Scented Letter autumn 2020. Please note that the issue may be free only for a limited time.
