From the molten core of the earth to the lung-filling openness of the sea — we covered a wide range of territories in my recent set of Love At First Scent episodes, which focussed on new releases from Hermes, Creed, Akro and Hiram Green. Here are links to all the videos, followed as ever by further thoughts on some of the scents: Hermes Terre D’Hermes eau de parfum intense reviewCreed Eladaria reviewAkro Breathe reviewHiram Green showcase review.

Slowdive 20:34

Moon Bloom 25:31

Shangri La 29:35

If you’ve never delved into the romantic world of Hiram Green, please do yourself a favour and order one of his discovery sets without delay. All of the above are well worth trying, but particular standouts are Moon Bloom (a tuberose displaying a heart-breaking balance of tenderness and drama), Hyde (birch tar doing a great job of expressing the animalic assertiveness of the Mr Hyde in all of us), Tryst (an orange blossom so lush, it makes you want to catch the first flight to Marrakesh so that you can buy some local pastries) and Shangri La (a spicy, peachy chypre, full of the sparkle and sophistication of a party at Gatsby’s mansion).

Hats off to the Powers That Be at Hermes for allowing Christine Nagel to create a Terre flanker that doesn’t seem to want to appeal to the lowest common denominator. Inspired by the idea of taking the brand’s surface-bound bestseller deep into the bowels of the planet, she’s latched a striking coffee and liquorice combo onto the familiar citrusy-cedary-vetiver spine to create a true juxtaposition of extremes. Towards the end, the core is abandoned in favour of more familiar Terre-like locales, but the journey through the centre of the earth makes a welcome change from all the predictable nonsense that men tend to receive from the mainstream. Interestingly, the new Dolce & Gabbana Devotion pour homme also features coffee… so perhaps this is perfumers’ way of saying that men need a wake-up call.
