You wouldn’t know it from the thin veil of ice that’s covering Maison Persolaise as I type these words, but spring is just around the corner… which means it’s time for another joint list. Olfactoria is our subject-selector this time and she’s set us the task of presenting our favourite mood-enhancing perfumes. So without further preamble – except for a mention of a superb give-away at the bottom of the post – here we go…

An otherworldly combination of mint and grass notes, it never fails to act as a tonic on a hot, stuffy day. And to think it’s one of the most affordable scents on the market. Guerlain, don’t you ever dare discontinue this stuff!
Gold ManGuy Robert (Amouage)
I know, I know, I keep going on about this one, but I honestly can’t think of any other scent which weaves a more potent resinous spell, makes me hold my head high and helps me cut through a crowd with confidence.
No 5 – Ernest Beaux (Chanel)
It’s a terrible cliche, but I really do love No 5. I don’t wear it myself, but I always have a bottle in my collection, because one whiff of its powdery, floral sophistication is enough to quell my most troubling thoughts.
Eau Dynamisante – Jacques Courtin (Clarins)
Another warm weather standby, this delightful citrus chypre just seems to keep getting better with age. In a similar vein, I also enjoy Cristalle, but this one is a more satisfying pick-me-up.
SarrasinsChristopher Sheldrake (Serge Lutens)
I had to include a jasmine on this list, and Uncle Serge’s full-scale version is one of the finest I know. Heady, smooth and indolic, it is pretty much guaranteed to put a smile on my face.
Eau Parfumée Au Thé BlancJacques Cavallier (Bulgari)
An unusual choice, perhaps, but it’s the silence of this creation which I’ve always found soothing. A faint sprinkling of pepper, a well-judged tea facet and an unobtrusive base of musks form a canopy of calm and tranquility.
Vintage DiorissimoEdmond Roudnitska (Christian Dior)
Another one which I prefer to smell on others rather than on myself. The vintage version is lily of the valley perfection, which in turn means that it is as optimistic, joyful and irresistible as any scent could possibly hope to be.
For more lists, please be sure to visit Olfactoria herself, as well as Eyeliner On A Cat, Fragrant Moments, and the new, permanent member of our team, Candy Perfume Boy.
And now for the draw. Some of you may be aware that this blog celebrated its third anniversary on Monday, so to mark the occasion, I’d like to hold a prize give-away for some special goodies. However, I’d like to keep them a surprise… except for one of them, that is. In addition to the secret gifts I’ll send to the winner, I’ll also include a sample of Noontide Petals, the latest, not-yet-released scent from Andy Tauer. If its descriptions are anything to go by, I suspect it’ll qualify as a mood-enhancer too, so its inclusion here is fitting.
To enter the draw, please read the terms and conditions below and leave a comment about which perfumes give you an instant lift.
Good luck, and my thanks to Andy for providing the prize.
Persolaise.

  1. Instant lift. : Eau du Soir Sisley, Sikkim Lancôme, Knowing ELauder, Chanel #19, Tuberouse Criminelle SLutens, Parfüm de Peau Montana, Rose Cardin, Baiser du Dragón Cartier, Vent vert Balmain, Escale à Portofino Dior, Pamplelune Allegoria Guerlain, Violette Annick Goutal, Ángel Thierry Mugler, First Van Cleef, and much more dear Dariush, but I think You Get the idea, have a nice Friday! Love Silvia

  2. Eau Dynamisante is also one of my favourites, another one is Jasper Conran Woman an earthy citrus that has been sadly discontinued, one whiff of this in the morning sets my mood for the day.Another mood enhancer for me is Tableau de parfum -Miriam,it took one sniff of a sample for me to order a FB immediatley,I love to feel it's smooth powdery cloud envelop me during the day and I've had more positive comments about this than anything so that definately puts me in a good mood.

  3. Thank you for sharing your mood-lifters, P.
I love to smell Gold Man on a man, for me it is the smell of charisma. So I guess it is a perfect choice for you. 🙂

  4. I love these "best of" lists and thank you for the draw!
I agree on herba fresca; its smell is linked with spring for me. I used to have the shaower gel version (now discontinued) and it was so powerful in conjuring green, fresh and blooming gardens in the grayest days of winter!!!
My spring-spring fragrance is Ninfeo mio, and anything jasmine (I am lemming the Rodin, and am settled with a la nuit. I'd love to try sarrasins. I like the dangerous color of the juice!)

  5. without a doubt, Nombre Noir, Cuiron, Eau Sauvage never fail to make me smile…i so wish they are reissued or released with original formula (eau sauvage especially)

  6. Hard to say, but my choice wil be Gold Man (Amouage) !
    Resinous… humh I'm fond of that smel…
    Have a bright day.
    Best wises from Brittany, France

  7. Tubereuse criminelle is so fresh and playful, never fails me, and My new instant perky spring fling is cuir de lancome.
But the one that is happiness in a bottle for me still is Diors Dolce vita. Have the old version, dont dare to try the new one in case of dissappointment..
    What a generous giveaway!

  8. When you mentioned perfumes that give an instant lift I immediately racked my brain for my favourite citrusy fragrances… which are few and far between. But then I thought any perfume that 'lifts my spirits' ought to qualify, so I'd go with Ormonde Woman, Carnal Flower, Moulin Rouge, Mon Numero 8 and L'Air du Desert Morocain.

Thanks for hosting the draw and a shoutout to Andy as well for the Noontide Petals, which I can't wait to try.

  9. Thanks for giving us the chance to win the surprise gift as well as Noontide Petals, which does sound wonderful. What gives me an instant lift? Another of Andy's wonderful creations, Incense Rosé! It has a fantastic flair about it that the moment I put it on it puts me in a good and positive mood… and then it becomes deeper and more introspective towards the evening, which is also appropriate for that time of day!

  10. I always enjoy these lists! A few of mine: the mood lifter Un Zest de Rose, Wazamba, Bond 9 Silver Factory for it's bubbly effervescent incense, Amouage Interlude Woman (it's addictive), vintage Shalimar, Dawn Spencer Hurwitz Inner Sanctum (deep winter enjoyment), the instant calm of Encens et Lavande, and the pretty, girly Prada Candy (don't judge) which is light hearted and fun to wear. I'm glad to see you mention the Bulgari; it's one of my favorites and not mentioned much in the blogosphere. Thanks for the draw, and happy anniversary!

  11. Right about now, my top mood enhancers are my most floral scents. Le Temps D'une Fete and Odalisque by Nicolai, Diorissimo for sure and I think I'll pull out Andy's Carillon pour une Ange for good luck in the Noontide Petals draw. 🙂

  12. Let's see, when I need a pick me up, I tend to reach for Guerlain's Vetiver or Thierry Mugler's Cologne or Evocative's Sky
    Thanks for the draw!

  13. A lift comes from whatever scent I crave at the moment! Since it is cold! this morn, Andy`s Eau d`Epices 🙂 I also can`t spell this early…..

  14. Congrats on the anniversary! 🙂 As for my instant lift fragrances, there are quite a few… Guerlain's Pamplelune, Goutal's Eau d'Hadrien, Hermès Un Jardin sur le Nil, Editions de Parfums Bigarade Concentrée.. I'm sure I forgot a few. This effect in fragrance is probably my favorite of all, even more than comfort/warmth.

  15. I love Annick Goutal's Petite Cherie right now! Smelling it brings me floating into the air~ Penhaligon's Juniper Sling is another one 🙂 And then I like Marc Jacob's Oh, Lola!

  16. I like "Vrai" by Fragonard and Clarin's "Eau Dynamisante" for a pick-me-up-in-the-morning-effect; Guerlain's "Mandarine Basilic" also does a good job, the classic "O de Lancome" (best enjoyed in vintage form), still one of the greatest citrus scents ever… and the smell of "Diorella" always enhances my mood.

Persolaise, congrats on your 3rd anniversary. Your writing is superb and I always enjoy reading you.

    Thank you for your generosity!
    Greetings from Jale

  17. L'Air du Desert Marocain: Instant peace. Wonderful.

Aromatics Elixir: Skillful balance between the aldehydic floral of Pleasures and the medicinal wood of Derby, like a white light showering over the earth. Fantastic.

31 Rue Cambon: Quite simply, one of the most beautiful perfumes I have ever smelled. Perfectly proportioned and truly classical.

Cuir de Russie: Has one of the greatest top chords of all time, a counterpoint between aldehydes, jasmine, iris, and birch tar that feels like a perfectly tuned Gregorian chant.

Knize Ten: I remember smiling the first time I smelled this–its top chord of cherries, hairspray, and isobutyl quinoline feels just right, like a smiling man with a cigarette.

  18. Very un-perfumista of me but I get an instant lift from (good) fruity-florals, especially fruity roses: Moschino Couture, L'Ombre dans l'Eau, Rose Praline, that kind of thing. Pink but sophisticated. Loulou also never fails to make me happy.

    1. Elisa, the less snobbishness there is about this kind of thing, the better… and I don't even like the word 'perfumista', to be honest.

      Loulou is genius!

  19. I have to go with pretty much any tuberose scent but, I particularly enjoy Beyond Love by Kilian and Carnal Flower.

  20. So many mood lifters to choose from! Guerlain's Aqua Allegoria Pampelune, Estée Lauder Youth Dew, Tocca Stella, Tauer Reverie au Jardin and Carillon pour un Ange, Goutal Ce Soir au Jamais, Scherrer Nuit Indiennes, Paloma Picasso Tentations…the list goes on!

Thanks for the draw, can't wait to smell Andy's latest brilliance!

  21. If I feel blue in the Spring/Summer I go with something golden white and that to me is Frangipani by Ormonde Jayne. But if I feel blue in the winter I go with golden black and to me that is Felanilla by Parfumerie Generale and Le Labo Vanille 44.
I love my verdant greeneries too but they don't mean necessarily an instant uplift as much as just a sense of fun, say Green, Green, Green and Green by Miller et Bertaux which I enjoy in the midst of the muggy NYC Summer.
Thanks for the giveaway and congratulations on the almost 3 years online

  22. Well, I´m naturally a positive and happy person, so generally I don´t look for uplifting qualities in a scent… But I do enjoy perfumes that enhance a certain mood or even perfumes that are a bit dark and melancholy because such moods can be very nice, if induced… There are a lot of scents that don´t make any difference in my mood but here are a few that do.
Bal à Versailles always makes me feel very sexy and confident. Kere by Slumberhouse is intensely warm and comforting. Jeke by Slumberhouse is also a confidence boost but empowering rather than sexy. L'Heure Bleue is calming and never fails to make me feel elegant and refined. I mostly own indie perfume oils and the one out of those that always fills me with peace, and brings back happy scent related memories , is Incendere by Alkemia. 🙂

  23. MaxMan above has "stolen" many of my submissions – Tauer's LDDM, and Aromatics Elixir. I also love love love Chanel's Sycomore and Coromandel. Congratulations on the anniversary and many more!
    Theresa

  24. Incense Rose by Andy Tauer, Santal Blush by Tom Ford, Une Rose Chypree by Andy Tauer, Gold Woman by Amouage, Miriam and Loretta by Tableau de Parfums (Andy Tauer), Opone by Diptyque …. and many, many more. There is no life without perfumes.

    1. Beata, I keep thinking I was too harsh on Santal Blush in my review of it. I often reach for my bottle. Perhaps I need to post a follow-up review…

  25. Anything with citrus is good for me. Eau d'Hadrien, I Profumi di Firenze Limone di Sicilia or Parfum d'Empire Iskander are best for a mood lift.

  26. As a middle aged woman who feels the heat (and her hormones ) in my country ,I tend to go for citrus type fragrances to lift me up from the dreaded humidity in summer. No the mood and temper is not good until I spritz on –
1)Clinique -Happy to Be, a limited edition of Happy but oh so much nicer and zingy.
2)Chanel -Crystille ,oh so divine if you lucky enough to have this hard to find fragrance from the early nineties ( I did say I was middle aged ! )
3)Hermes-Un Jardin Sur le Toit- my favorite by far.Like a fresh garden of soil and herbs wet by summer rains. So refreshing !
4 ) L Occitane -Vebena Sorbet, just discovered this one.Its so fresh and tangy that its smell still lingers after my bath.

  27. Lovely list Persolaise
My goodness, there are so many, in addition to those I've already noted elsewhere I'll add:
    Narcisse Noir by Caron
    Chanel No. 19
    Acqua di Parma Colonia
Frederic Malle Potrait of a Lady
    Gucci Envy for Men

    Yours ever
    The Perfumed Dandy

  28. For me the perfect mood is often associated with a sense of superiority. Paloma Picasso makes me feel strictly. I am always serious and on the alert with it. Private Collection Estée Lauder also gives me a sense of rigor. Eau de Gentiane Blanche Hermes and Y by YSL keep me in a serious wave. All of them are wonderful in the spring. Additionally Serge Noir is perfectly fits to elegant business style which I really love to had.

    1. Elin, I'm a big fan of Y… which is why I haven't dared to try the latest version. I'm worried it might be altered beyond recognition.

  29. I too share one of your 'mood-enhancers' i.e. Eau Dynamisante. (Never seem to tire of it even after all these many years.) – Plus lately another has been Séville à l'Aube.
But more importantly -> Congrats on your 3rd Anniversary Persolaise ! 🙂 …
& much thanx for the draw – (a new Tauer is indeed like gold-dust to us 'frag-dependents'.)

  30. For me there is nothing like a good dose of fig for instant happiness, be it the beautiful natural fig of Philosykos, or the salty woody twist of Womanity. Transports me right back to happy times in the Mediterannean.

  31. My day feel-good scent is an old one,but it always does the trick for me so why change: its name is Grey Flannel. For troubled times, at night, I confess Ambre sultan is the one I go to.

  32. A very rich and varied list and collection of fragrant food for the soul. 🙂

Congrats on Persolaise's 3rd anniversary as well! Time sure is flying…

[by the way, no need to enter me in the draw, just wanted to leave a few words about the post]

  33. my instant lift is actually rose chypre, but sometimes its rose vermeille – both are Andy Tauer perfumes. I am very hopeful I will get to sample noontide. Thank you for the chance.

  34. My current instant lift is Neela Vermeire's Bombay Bling (which I've taken to calling Bombaby, because it makes me happy.)

  35. happy aniversary
my mood lifters are Eau Dinamisante ( so glad you mentioned it) and Herba Fresca
for enhanced self confidence I turn to Ambre Sultan or Encense Flamboyante
    thanks for the draw

  36. hmmm. depends on the day and circumstance. My Amouage Epic Woman has grown on me and I now find myself self-sniffing frequently…happy to be me at that moment. There are about 5 perfumes I wear most. The rest on a whim and a dare to be different at that moment.

  37. i'm a big fan of bvlgari's au the blanc as well! my favorite mood-lifting perfumes are probably a few of annick goutal's – i love her fresh, springtime scents, especially eau de camille and le chevrefeiulle.

  38. Congratulations on your anniversary! As for my biggest lifter, it would have to be Creed's Selection Verte – cool and refreshing always.

  39. Just to jump for joy – grapefruit, dewy rose or cold jasmine, either mixed or soliflore. Concentree de Pamplemousse Rose – Hermes, Un Jardin Sur Le Nil, Terre d'Hermes, Bvlgari Rose Essentielle, 4 Reines – L'Occitane, Stella Sheer, Armani Prive Eclat de Jasmine, Gelsomino Nobile – Acqua di Parma, PG Drama Nuui, Daisy and Daisy Eau So Fresh – MJ, Chance Eau Fraiche – Chanel…I guess I'm too predictable and it's nothing pretty special…I have AA Herba Fresca but I use it to soothe my trobled mind or during travelling when I'm getting nausea.
These days I am down with a flu and nothing aromatic really fits me…But I decided to risk and test the calming power of Au The Blanc and it works, indeed!!!!!! Thank you!

  40. CB I hate perfume's dirt accord! In Black March and Wild Hunt is simply amazing, it makes me remember the life that grows everywhere, like when you see a small green sprout at the asphalt of your city.

    Thank you for the draw!

  41. Thanks for the draw! I love Andy's LDDM or Incense Rose for a lift, also a good cologne like 4711.

  42. Thanks for the draw! I think that Andy Tauer's work has this effect, Carillon pour un Ange, Orange star, Incense Rose, LDDM, etc…and I'm sure that Noontide will be as good as always!

  43. My instant lift source is Ninfeo Mio. Refreshing like a cold creek in deep green forest.

    BR,
    xena

  44. Andy Tauer: Zeta, Carillon pour un Ange and Une Rose Vermeille
    Thierry Mugler: Cologne,
Annick Goutal : Quel Amour and Nimfeo Mio
    Hermes: Jour d'Hermes
Also, I agree with Herba Fresca by Guerlain (Aqua Allegoria )
    Thank you for the draw
    Happy blog Anniversary
    Phanie

  45. CB I Hate Perfume's Memory of Kindness – I just need to sniff that fresh tomato leaf and I am in the garden on a warm, sunny day.

  46. Thanks for the draw!
Well, it's difficult to choose as almost any scent alters my mood. Most of them tend to take me away from the reality and enjoy the illusion or the moments of nostalgy. But when I have to be present in this world I choose Knize Ten or 1740 by HdP – gives me the lift and support I need.

  47. I get an instant lift from both Ninfèo Mio and Séville à l'Aube – rather similar, I think.

    Congratulations on three years!

  48. Happy Anniversary!
Many fragrances that take me a lift into the clouds, but some of my favorite fragrances are definitely:
Grain de Paisir de Maitre P.&G. , Barry Lyndon – Maria Candida Gentile , Un Parfum de Charme et Feuilles – the Different Company and l'Eau d'Hermes.
    Thank you for the draw.

  49. Congratulations on the third anniversary of the blog!

Some of the perfumes that lift my mood to a happy place are: Orange Star, Bois 1920 Classic, Eau d'Italie Au Lac, Fior d'Arancio by Laura Tonatto and A Quiet Morning by Miller & Bertaux.

    Thank you for the drawing.

  50. Many Happy Returns and thanks for a great draw!

One that gives me a sparkling smile – Eau d'Italie Jardin du Poete!
One that uplifts me gently when I am on the sad side – Hermes Jour.
One that makes me sit straight and puts my papers in order – Malle Parfum de Therese.

    Maria

  51. I love Une Rose , I found my travel spray when I was in hospital .I sprayed and soon I was smiling like a goonie and relaxing.
Chanel no 5 is avery good mood enhancer especially the pure perfume on my daughter.
Hamman Bouquet is also very relaxing to me.

  52. OH, I do so love the Clarins Eau Dynamisante! Another mood-booster for me is linden, see: Tauer's Zeta, D'Orsay's Tilleul.

If I win, please send the Tauer sample to someone else – I'm lucky enough to have already tried it. 🙂

  53. It depends on why I need the instant lift. If it's just because the weather is depressing (and that can mean too hot and humid, as well as wet and miserable – I'm not a fan of extremes), then I will go for the weather's 'opposite', a cologne like 4711, or a citrus like Pamplelune for the heat, and an incense or a vanilla for the cold, like Avignon, Black Cashmere, or Shalimar. If I need to lift my mood, that's harder. I just have to rummage through my collection until something speaks to me! It's a good thing I have a lot of perfumes, because it can take a while. 🙂 I do tend to fall back on the classics when feeling down, though – Miss Dior, Ma Griffe, Mitsouko, Cristalle, No. 5…. they usually make me feel better.

  54. Good question, although most perfumes I like tend to enhance my mood. I'd go to fresher scents too, predictibly enough, only because the glamorous/heavier ones just put me in a state of alert and not relaxation. Let's see, a few spritzes of Fico di Amalfi (cheerful fig, eh?), Houbigant's Orangers en Fleurs, Herba Fresca, Harmatan Noir and any vetiver make my day. I also just discovered Perfumed Water NO. 4 from Evidens de Beaute – wonderful and luminous.

Happy birthday for the blog! 🙂

  55. I cannot live without:
    – Neela Vermeire: Mohur
    – Andy: Miriam
    – YSL: Nu
    – Coquillete: Herat
    – Cerchi nell Aqua: Jolie
    – DKNY Woman
    – Acampora: Iranzol
    – Hermessence: Poivre Samarcand and Paprika Brazil
    …and No.5 forever

    Happy Birthday!

  56. Trayee has become my elixir, just as Mohur and Bombay Bling. Orange star, Musc Ravageur, Jubilation XXV and Antaeus are also great for me.

I love hearing from my readers, so please feel free to write a comment or ask a question.
