I’m sure you all know this by now, but please, just indulge me, because I’m going to get a real kick out of typing the following words:
Tauer Perfumes’ Orange Star won the award for Best Niche Perfume at Thursday’s FiFi UK ceremony.
Huge congratulations to Andy and also a massive thank you to Basenotes readers for showing that they’ve got excellent taste… far better taste, in fact, than several of the associations that voted in some of the other categories, but let’s not go there…
I really would love to share every single detail of last week with you, but realistically, I know I simply won’t have the time to give you in-depth reports about all the events I attended. I’ll just have to do my best to select the most interesting anecdotes and observations and present them in little, bite-sized posts.
But before I start doing that, here are a couple of links. The first is to an article I wrote for the Gorilla Perfume blog about a perfume party I recently attended in Portsmouth; if you enjoy reading it, please consider leaving a comment. And the second is to a new Mystery Sample project being carried out by Scent & Sensibility Perfume on Facebook; I urge you to check it out as it sounds like it could be good fun.
I’ll finish with a mildly amusing incident from last week.
I was in the perfume hall at Harrods and noticed that the counter with the Aramis, DK and Michael Kors perfumes was sporting an iPad with some sort of ‘fragrance profiling’ app flashing across its screen. The Sales Assistant ran me through the programme, which basically involved tapping on a series of images designed to gauge my personal preferences as regards holiday destinations, foods, clothes etc. Now, I wasn’t expecting this simplistic approach to yield an earth-shatteringly insightful result, but I honestly didn’t think the conclusion would be quite as pointless as it turned out to be.
After I completed the process, the SA tapped the screen, gave me a smile and happily proclaimed that I’m sexy and sophisticated as well as casual, laid back and easy-going.
“And what does that mean?” I asked.
“It means that you can wear any fragrance in our range!”
“That is a complete cop out,” I said, and just walked away.
Persolaise.

That's not the most helpful fragrance profile ever, is it?
Congratulations to Mr Tauer on the success of Orange Star – well deserved in my opinion. I am enjoying my bottle very much, and thank you again.
Astrology forecast/Fortune teller tripe gone undercover w/ tech!!! 🙂
Grace London, you're more than welcome.
And you're quite right. Picking any perfume bottle at random – whilst wearing a blindfold – would probably have produced a better result.
Linda, you're not kidding!
ROTFL! You probably did not, but when I read that, I read it as you throwing your name over your shoulder as you walked away, and it was hilarious.
Thanks for the anecdote 😉
deeHowe, I most definitely did not reveal my name, but yes, that would've been pretty funny… 🙂
It's a glorified Magic 8 Ball! "What perfume should I wear this Spring?" – "Ask again later". "Will there be more Oudh perfumes released this year?" – "Better not tell you now", etc.
Undina, you're not kidding… and thank you for reminding me of Magic 8 balls!! I remember them well. I ALWAYS got 'Ask again later"!!
