“The ideas were great, but the formulas were very, very long. I mean, Azuree was more than 200 products. We just had to shorten the formula, take all of the key ingredients that were making the accord, and streamline the whole thing, so that it looks like a nicely Photoshopped version of the original, while being the original.”
Five classics from the Estee Lauder catalogue – Estee, Azuree, Private Collection, White Linen and Knowing – have just been released as so-called Legacy versions in a collection conceived and curated by none other than Frederic Malle, with a little help from Carlos Benaim, Anne Flipo and Bruno Jovanovic. In an interview with Sali Hughes at the range’s press launch at Harrods the other day, Malle spoke about the problems he faced when trying to re-frame older scents for a contemporary audience, as well as why he didn’t include Youth Dew in the selection and whether it’s helpful to think of perfumes in terms of whether they’re ‘commercial’. I have a vintage bottle of Knowing. A little goes a long, long and even longer way. It’s a room filler. I very much enjoy it. Got a great deal on it also a few years back. I really enjoy these vintage women’s perfumes.
