I’m fairly certain it was J G Ballard who once said he couldn’t face sweet potatoes as he’d been forced to endure an endless diet of them in a prisoner of war camp. I wonder what he’d have made of the impossibly named Buly Patate Douce Des Caraibes Et Carotte D’Afghanistan. Part of the brand’s new Les Jardins Francais collection, I reviewed it in a recent YouTube video. Here’s a link: Buly Patate Douce Des Caraibes Et Carotte D’Afghanistan review.

The love of the vegetal (trying saying that quickly after a few kale smoothies) has been evident in a few brands lately, including Jo Malone and L’Artisan Parfumeur. This effort from Buly is amongst the more successful, with each of the entries presenting a credible rendition of its star material. Patate is perhaps the least cologne-like and the most perfume-y of the six, leaning closer to the carrots (which is to say it projects a strong iris note) before landing on a base that is ambery, balsamic and gently sugary. It’s elegant and wearable, and not for one second does it make you think you’ve just stepped into the fresh produce aisle at Sainsbury’s.
