As far as perfume brand concepts go, ‘the wild animals of Poland’s forests’ does perhaps lie towards the bizarre end of the spectrum. But then, these days, most unifying themes tend to be of the attention-seeking variety. And if Zoologist can enjoy success with macaques, koalas and cows, there’s no reason why a Slavic menagerie shouldn’t be able to. So it was with as open a mind as possible that I sniffed the wares from Wolf Brothers, a Polish company with a somewhat dubious (or is it ironic?) approach to PR copy. You can watch my showcase video about their work at this link: Wolf Brothers perfumes showcase review.
Of the six compositions I sampled, the only one to which I’m tempted to return is Goat. The others are all innocuously pleasant in their own way – and, to give them their due, they avoid the super-loud cliches we might have expected from the overblown rhetoric on the website and the moody accompanying visuals. But they do little to stand out from the herd of releases that continues to trample its way into our world. Goat, on the other hand, shows signs of a genuine attempt to strive for some measure of originality. With its earthy mushroom note, its suggestion of sour milk and, appropriately enough, the inclusion of a funky-fecal oud facet, it startles and perplexes in a way the rest never manage. Leave the lupine howling to the others and just follow the bleating.
