Heads up! If you’ve had your eye (or nose?) on a bottle of Serge Lutens Tubereuse Criminelle, now may be the time to shell out those hard-earned pennies, because rumour has it the scent could soon be slinking off into the shadows like a silent-footed cat burglar. The rumour may be groundless, of course, but I decided to use it as an opportunity to talk about the fragrance in a recent episode of Love At First Scent. Here’s a link: Serge Lutens Tubereuse Criminelle review.

TC must surely be one of the finest achievements of the long-standing partnership between Lutens and Christopher Sheldrake, bringing to the fore all of their strengths. It’s a stunningly well-executed piece of work, as you’d expect from Sheldrake, displaying a tremendous level of attention to detail and a stunning evaporation curve. And it’s also bold, vampish and distinctive, no doubt thanks to the input of naughty Uncle Serge. From its bizarre, mentholated-petrol opening, through to its curvaceous tuberose mid-section, and its wickedly more-ish base of vanillic musks, it is an all-out triumph. A modern classic, if ever there was one.
