Let’s blame Covid. In 2020, Spaniard Francisco Gratacos launched his very own perfume brand. But it’s taken me until now to discover his wares, created by none other than Rodrigo Flores-Roux. There are six scents in his collection at the moment, and I discussed them over on Love At First Scent a little while ago. Here’s a link to the episode: Wilgermain brand review.

I expect I’ll share more thoughts on some of these scents in the weeks and months to come. But for now I’ll just mention the main point Flores-Roux wanted to stress about his work here when I discussed the brand with him. Wilgermain is meant to be seen as a house with a classical aesthetic, he said, in the sense that it eschews strangeness, weirdness and any other attribute that might come across as unrefined. Seen in that light, and taken as a whole, the brand is a success, exploring familiar structures (chypre, amber, citrus et al) and re-presenting them in subtly novel ways. Highlights include Passion Victim (a love child of Shalimar and Calvin Klein Obsession) as well as More Is More (an opulent, leathery rose). Seek them out, if you can.
