Hermes Twilly D’Hermes Eau Ginger Review – Christine Nagel; 2021

A scent must be doing fairly well if it’s granted a second flanker. Back in 2017 (was it really that long ago?) Hermes released their first high-profile feminine release for quite a while in the shape of Twilly D’Hermes: a deceptively straightforward twirl of joy, structured on ginger, tuberose and sandalwood. Two years later, Christine Nagel revisited her original formula and gave it a bit more kick for the Eau Poivree flanker (click here for my review). And now we have yet another follow-up: Twilly D’Hermes Eau Ginger. This new addition is the least interesting of the Twillys, and it does make one wonder whether its creation was led by an attempt to target a particular market (somewhere east of the Indian Ocean?) rather than by a genuine desire to explore and rejig the composition of the 2017 release. That said, it is never anything less than pleasant, and it may perform well at the tills, given that it doesn’t display the eccentric edge which some may have found off-putting in its predecessors. It is a shame though, that it isn’t especially gingery.

Speaking of which, it would be fascinating to learn what the marketing thinking was behind using the English word ‘ginger’ in the scent’s name, seeing as the earlier flanker used the French ‘poivree.’ Granted, ‘gingembre’ is a struggle for non-French speakers, and its adjective form (is ‘gingembree’ even a word?) would have been more problematic. But the use of the English does tend to support the notion that this new Hermes gal has her sights set far beyond the Champs D’Elysees.
