Oh, the joys of being in the hands of a master. Last year, I had the tremendous pleasure of sampling Dominique Ropion’s three ‘shot’ extraits for Olfactive Studio, and I was so taken with one of them – Violet Shot – that I almost included it on my list of the best scents of 2020. I have finally managed to cover it in an episode of Love At First Scent. Here’s a link: Olfactive Studio Violet Shot review.

The combo of violet and leather has been explored to great effect in other perfumes – as discussed in the video – but it’s always wonderful to see it being attempted again, especially by someone particularly skilled at making huge materials feel intimate and detailed. Under Ropion’s expert dosage, the floral note is connected so seamlessly with the leather (which comes to us via Safraleine and Ambroxan), it feels like you’re smelling the pairing for the first time ever. And any scent that manages this most difficult of effects is well worth seeking out.

  1. […] Of the other Sepia scents, Bertrand Duchaufour’s Chypre Shot is worth seeking out. This one avoids any Guerlain-isms (no Mitsouko here) and attempts the trick many modern chypres attempt in order to earn the label: substitute oakmoss with a heavy dose of patchouli. It takes a while to get going — the use of coffee at the top is a touch too glaring and distracting — but it comes into its bitter, velvety own when it approaches its drydown. (For my review of the best scent from this mini-range, Violet Shot, also by Ropion, please click here.) […]
