Sunspel Oak Wood review by award-winning perfume critic Persolaise, 2020, 2019

I’m tempted to say that somebody missed a trick here. But that would be a case of over-indulging my facetious side. While carrying out some research on Sunspel (a clothing brand with which I’m not overly familiar) I discovered not only that it introduced boxer shorts to the UK market, but that theirs was the make of boxers worn by none other than Nick Kamen in THAT Levi’s advert. Dare I say: perfect perfume brief? Sunspel would appear not to have anyone as mischievous as me on their creative team, which is probably just as well. For their Oak Wood fragrance, they’ve decided to keep things classy by turning to the pared-back aesthetics of Lyn Harris. Result: a more-than-creditable piece of work, characterised by the tender luminosity that Harris has made her own. There isn’t anything especially novel in the central herb-wood-incense accord (heavy on cedar) but it is convincing and it successfully conveys images of knitwear-clad, rosy-cheeked lovelies frolicking in the verdant English countryside. Which is precisely what the brand wanted, I expect. Congrats all round. But next… please can we have Eau De Laundrette?
