I know everyone always says this, but I can assure you that this time, it’s absolutely true. Choosing my favourite entry in the 1st anniversary competition was no easy task. In fact, I found it so difficult that I had to enlist the help of the long-suffering Madame Persolaise.

After a great deal of deliberation, we reached a unanimous decision and I am very pleased to announce that the winner of the first prize is

Alastair in the Arabian Gulf.

Selecting the winner of the second prize was much simpler, because all I had to do was consult the oracle of Random.org… and the name it picked was

RRomani.

Congratulations to Alastair and RRomani. Please remember that you have until Friday 25th March to send me an email at persolaise at gmail dot com with your postal addresses. If you have not contacted me by then, new winners will be selected.

And to all of you: thank you very, very much indeed for your superb entries. Your words reminded me that I’m extremely fortunate to be able to enjoy the wonderful world of perfume, to write this blog and to interact with so many thoughtful, witty and erudite readers.

Please keep coming back to Persolaise.com for more draws and give-aways. Fingers crossed, the next prize I hope to be able to offer is a sample of MDCI’s new La Belle Hélène, composed by Bertrand Duchaufour.

And don’t forget that I’m soon going to reveal the identity of the person I’m about to interview for an upcoming Basenotes article. I shall need all the help I can get from you to come up with some suitably probing questions.

I’ll leave you with Alastair’s winning entry:

Perfume is important to me because it speaks. Just as the sight of green leaves fills me like a shout. And the flavour of tart apples entertains me like a well-timed joke. And the hiss of the tea kettle announces five minutes of peace. And the feel of the damp curls on my little boy’s head whispers chuldhood memories. If everyday experiences speak through the senses, then perfume is essential to the conversation.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend,

Persolaise.
