Chanel Coco review by award-winning perfume critic Persolaise, 1984, 2024

It’s currently cool to be dismissive of Coco, in much the same way that it’s deemed acceptable to be snooty about Chance. Curiously, there’s a whiff of ageism in the attitude towards both those fragrances. In the case of the latter, the main criticism is that the scent is too air-headedly youthful (whatever that means). And Coco is often damned with that most disparaging of labels: old-fashioned. But this refusal to see beyond the features that mark it as a 1980s creation is unfair, and it reveals more about the critic than it does about the subject.

One of the most beloved scents of the 1980s – Chanel Coco – celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, and I’ve posted a review of it on my Substack. Here’s a link: Chanel Coco review. I hope you enjoy reading it.

  1. Hi Mr P! I’d love to read your review, and subscribed for the free option on Substack as I think you suggested we do at first. However, Substack will still only let me read the first two paragraphs, and asks me to sign up for a 7-day free trial to read the rest. If I can’t read on Substack beyond this week, does this mean that Persolaise.com written content is now subscribers-only?

    1. Thanks very much for your question.

I tried to explain my current plan on my first Substack post, which is free for everyone to read: https://open.substack.com/pub/dariushalavi/p/setting-out-my-stall-and-the-top?r=2yu535&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&showWelcome=true

As things stand at the moment, I will continue to broadcast free videos on YouTube. I will also continue to publish posts about each video here on Persolaise.com, in which I’ll aim to offer a few more thoughts about the perfumes in question, in addition to the views I’ve expressed in the video. For quite a long time, there have been very few posts on Persolaise.com which haven’t been directly linked to a YouTube video. Most non-video-related posts will now be on Substack and yes, most of them will be for paying subscribers. Hopefully, there’ll be more of these posts than there have been in recent years. Occasionally, there will also be free posts on Substack.

By the way, in my original Substack post the suggestion I made was that people go for the monthly subscription at the moment, as opposed to the annual, just in case things don’t go according to plan and I have to abandon the platform.

I hope this answers your question.

  2. Ah I was wondering the same thing as the first query as I signed up for the free Substack option too(unfortunately to cash strapped for both other options) & the same thing happened.I would have loved to read your Coco article.Sadly I received 2 different & separate emails about this article & both block me.Pay walls are always upsetting.Oh well.Take care & thank you from Nadine in Sydney who suggested the Best of Citrus show.

I love hearing from my readers, so please feel free to write a comment or ask a question.
