For this year’s final regular episode of Love At First Scent, we went all the way from sunny peaches to asteroid-bound rocket fuel, via delicate orange blossom and butcher-than-expected lavender, thanks to new releases from Ulrich Lang, Gucci and Puente. I also made a bit of time for a classic scent: Guerlain’s moving and much-missed floral chypre from 1975, Parure. Here’s a link to the broadcast, followed by the full list of perfumes I covered, with timestamps: Ulrich Lang Suncrest, Puente Eau De Fougere & Eaden, Gucci Guilty Elixir Pour Femme & Pour Homme and other reviews.

Jo Loves Amber Lime & Bergamot 6:11
Gucci Guilty Elixir Pour Femme 10:14
Gucci Guilty Elixir Pour Homme 15:08
Ulrich Lang Suncrest 21:25
Puente Eau De Fougere 29:55
Puente Eaden 37:50
Guerlain Parure 45:18

On this occasion, I don’t have a great deal to add to what I said in the video, although I will just repeat that the masculine version of Gucci Guilty Elixir is a welcome departure from the generic, faux-citrusy, ultra-woody aberrations that tend to be served up to men by the mainstream these days. Ulrich Lang Suncrest is a likeable, none-too-demure peach composition, but it doesn’t reach the standards set by the brand’s best work. And the two Puentes, particularly Eaden, prove that this is a house whose output we should all watch very closely. Naturalistic, graceful and yet so much more than merely pleasant, both of these scents pay homage to the past while keeping their ambitions set firmly on the future. As long as creators like Eliam Puente are around, perfumery will be safe.

  1. Hi! Have you tried Gucci Guilty Intense Pour Femme from 2022? It has a great plum note, I would be curious to hear what you think about it.

I love hearing from my readers, so please feel free to write a comment or ask a question.
