Goodness me, the folks at Guerlain have been keeping busy. Not only have they given us new Shalimar, La Petite Robe Noire, L’Homme Ideal and Habit Rouge flankers this year, they’ve also expanded and re-designed the Aqua Allegoria range, they’ve added six extraits to L’Art Et La Matiere (I hope to bring you some info on these in due course) and they’ve added two eaux de parfum to the latter collection, following on from the gorgeous Jasmin Bonheur. And that is by no means a comprehensive list of their 2023 releases. It is almost impossible to keep up with everything they’re doing, but in an effort to stay up-to date with their output, I recently reviewed one of their newer pieces, Tobacco Honey, over on YouTube. Here’s a link: Guerlain Tobacco Honey review.

Thinking back to what I said during the broadcast, I feel I may have been overly lukewarm about Delphine Jelk’s work here. After all, it is never anything less than attractive and wearable. The tobacco accord maintains a commendable distance from the honey facet. The greenness at the top complements the woodiness in the base with tremendous finesse. The injection of florals acts as a harmonising bridge between the two. It all works extremely well indeed. But perhaps what stops me from falling hopelessly in love with it (in the way that I did with Jasmin Bonheur) is the lack of an element of surprise. It’s as seamless and surface-obsessed as a Steven Soderbergh movie, at least when’s in the mode that creates Ocean’s Eleven or Out Of Sight. Had we had just a tiny hint of the idiosyncrasies evident in Solaris or even, dare I say it, Che, then Tobaco Honey would have been considerably more memorable.

  1. This smells lovely, as most Guerlains do, but I’m suffering from extreme price fatigue at the moment, and this fatigue is seriously impacting one of the joys in my life. Perfume was always seen as a way for people with less than trust fund means to enjoy a little luxury, but the prices for this range belie that fact. I have had to drastically curtail my perfume spending this year. However Guerlain did manage to prise €120 for Rouge Privée. I would love a bottle of Tobacco Honey as well but, I fear I may have to close the doors on my perfume wardrobe for the foreseeable future. 🥲

  2. Gorgeous scent but yes, an untenable price. Miller Harris tobacco terrific at less than half the price.

I love hearing from my readers, so please feel free to write a comment or ask a question.
