After 2021’s Vanilla Planifolia and last year’s Tonka, the folks at Guerlain are trying to generate another burst of frenzied buying with a third entry in the limited edition Shalimar Millesime series, this time with Millesime Iris. I reviewed the scent on YouTube the other day. Here’s a link to the video: Guerlain Shalimar Millesime Iris review.

The purist in me could spend a great deal of energy getting worked up about the very considerable distance between this flanker and Shalimar proper – and, crucially, between it and a scent that could justifiably be called Iris – but there wouldn’t be much point in doing that. When you’re faced with olfactory calories of this magnitude – the emphasis in this scent is massively on caramel notes – there’s little you can do but throw your arms up in surrender and hope that the pennies generated by this release will enable Guerlain to release something less heavy-handed and more interesting in the future. In the meantime, I shall remain grateful that I still have the superior Vanilla and Tonka variants in my collection.

  1. I first tried this new flanker on a tester strip, and all I got was sugar, even a day after.
But on my skin, it develops completely differently. I get Tonka and bitter almond and some iris. But hardly any sugary sweetness. Despite what I expected, it’s a like for me.
I’ll wear it for October and will switch over to last year’s flanker in November.
