For the seventh episode of my Masterclass series, I headed over to Salalah in southern Oman. Joining me in the virtual studio were Renaud Salmon (Chief Creative Officer at Amouage), Dominique Roques (ingredients expert, former head of sourcing at Firmenich and author of In Search Of Perfumes) as well as Matt Wright (head of Amouage’s innovative Wadi Dawkah site). The focus of our discussion was on Amouage’s plan to revive Oman’s frankincense industry and create a sustainable source of the material by growing and nurturing their own trees in what was once a key point on the ancient spice and incense trade route. As per usual, our conversation touched on a wide range of issues, including the responsibilities that come with running a UNESCO World Heritage site, the creation of the Middle East’s first ‘smart forest’ and, somewhat unexpectedly, the unwanted effects of camel grazing. Here’s a link to the episode: perfume Masterclass – ingredients – Omani frankincense.
