[Dolce & Gabbana, L’Objet and Maison Crivelli reviews based on samples
provided by the brands in 2023.]

Don’t judge a bottle by its crown. That was the moral of a recent episode of Love At First Scent, in which I reviewed, amongst other perfumes, new releases from Maison Crivelli and Dolce & Gabbana. Here’s a link to the video, followed by timestamps and further thoughts on some of the fragrances: Dolce & Gabbana K edp and Q edp, L’Objet Rose Noir, Bois Sauvage, Cote Maquis and Oh Mon Dieu, Maison Crivelli Neroli Nasimba reviews.

Dolce & Gabbana K edp (Daphne Bugey & Nathalie Lorson) 3:45
Dolce & Gabbana Q edp (Daphne Bugey) 6:40
L’Objet Rose Noir (Yann Vasnier) 15:55
L’Objet Bois Sauvage (Yann Vasnier) 20:17
L’Objet Cote Maquis (Yann Vasnier) 23:38
L’Objet Oh Mon Dieu (Yann Vasnier) 26:53
Maison Crivelli Neroli Nasimba (Paul Guerlain) 32:26

D&G K was as dire as expected: a morass of mindlessness that should be removed from all shelves forthwith. But Q was a pleasant surprise. Contrary to what might have been suggested by the colour of its juice, it isn’t overly sweet, fruity or ditzy, focussing instead on gentle, almondy-jasmine florals.

Neroli Nasimba is well worth seeking out for the dryness with which it presents its central note. Nowhere in sight are the juicy, zesty elements we’ve been led to expect by the likes of Tom Ford Neroli Portofino. In their place, Paul Guerlain has brought in an arid, wind-beaten desert of leather, calling to mind stills from Bertolucci’s The Sheltering Sky. Its restraint serves to make it so much more romantic than it would have been had Guerlain taken a more direct route to our heartstrings. It may be somewhat lacking in the longevity department, but it more than makes up for this with grand, sweeping emotion.

Finally, since broadcasting the video I’ve been informed that the perfumes from L’Objet aren’t new smells at all, but merely eau de parfum versions of home and body product scents that have been around for some time. Rose Noir is worth mentioning for its elegant patchouli drydown (more than a shade of Aromatics Elixir) but what comes before is fairly predictable rose-leather fare. The two which held my attention were Oh Mon Dieu (a cheeky, rose-and-violet lipstick chypre) as well as Bois Sauvage (an unsettling, hard-to-define encounter with cedar, cypress, patchouli, tobacco and incense).
