If any brand is allowed to have more than its fair share of leather perfumes, it’s Hermes. And they’ve just created another one, in the form of an addition to their high-end Hermessence range. It’s called Violette Volynka and I reviewed it over on YouTube a few days ago. Here’s a link: Hermes Violette Volynka review.

In the spectrum of Hermes leathers, Volynka occupies an interesting position. Not as outright ‘masculine’ as Equipage, as accessible as Kelly Caleche or as strange and diaphanous as Cuir D’Ange, it sees Christine Nagel presenting the main material in an innocent, almost naive frame, almost as though it’s taking on a child-like guise. Indeed, it could be read as the young, impressionable offspring of Nagel’s own Galop.

To be clear: it is not an entirely innocent or quiet scent. Indeed, its central leather facet has no qualms about making its presence known and filling its surroundings with pungent tannery notes. But the real magic lies in its intriguing violet-ish background. Sweet, fragile and demure, it offers a stark contrast with the louder elements and creates a pacifying antidote to the more aggressive, more assertive traits normally associated with this genre. Nowhere near as simple as it first appears, and well worth seeking out.
