For the final review of the year, I presented a quick showcase of the wares from Milano Fragranze — a new perfume house created by Alessandro Brun of Masque Milano. Anyone launching a brand in 2021 deserves praise for bravery. But managing to launch a brand that actually features more than its fair share of noteworthy compositions is especially commendable. In the video, I focussed on three of the standouts – Galleria, Diurno and Basilica – and the most recent release, Panettone. Here’s a link: Milano Fragranze Galleria, Diurno, Basilica, Panettone review.

I remain thoroughly intrigued by Basilica (Violaine Collas). On the one hand, it’s a pretty straightforward frankincense composition. But the inclusion of a bready, yeasty, thyme-and-rosemary accord propels it into a different league: the sort of scent that makes you picture images you’ve never witnessed in real life. In this case, a Sunday mass that is paused half-way through to enable the congregation to munch on some freshly-baked zaatar bread. It’s downright odd, but it works.
