It was time for another interview over on Love At First Scent the other day, and on this occasion, the person in the hot seat – live from the exotic shores of Poole – was Emma Dick, current in-house perfumer at Lush. Here’s a link: Lush perfumer Emma Dick interview.

As per usual, several different topics were explored during the broadcast, not least the fact that Dick occupies a fascinating position in the fragrance world. She has had no formal perfumer training, and yet she creates the smells for the products from a brand that is arguably known to everybody in the ‘developed’ world — smells that are, for many of us, strongly associated with certain corners of our high streets and shopping malls. What’s more, Lush itself has taken up a unique space in the perfume industry: selling interesting and relatively expensive perfumes (£150 for 100 ml of Sappho!) in a setting that is decidedly high-street and ‘accessible’.

All of this was discussed during the interview, as were the creation of the Renaissance collection in 2019, the Lush spa treatment and whether the brand’s scents can be called ‘niche’. In between all that, we also managed to smell and chat about Sappho and Confetti.

I hope you enjoy the video.
