Rightly or wrongly, a release from Caron comes as something of a surprise nowadays. The brand’s allure seems to be rooted so strongly in its past achievements that we don’t think of it as being a source of contemporary work. And yet, a new masculine has just emerged from them – Aimez-Moi Comme Je Suis – and I reviewed it in a recent episode of Love At First Scent. To watch the video, please click on this link: Caron Aimez-Moi Comme Je Suis review.

There’s nothing in this new composition that takes it anywhere near the heights of Pour Un Homme, Yatagan or Troisieme Homme. Granted, it’s superior to most mainstream masculine fare – something for which to be grateful, I suppose – but it’s also little more than pleasant. The nut-and-citrus accord does its innocuously endearing thing… and then fades away. In this case, ‘love me as I am’ feels like another way of saying, ‘I can’t be bothered to try harder’.

  1. Being a fan of the tried-and-true Caron masculines (Pour un Homme, Le Troisième Homme and Yatagan), I took a gamble and purchased this un-sniffed from a European. Initially, I had the same response that you do in this video; I thought that the scent profile borrowed to heavily from current trends and that this was simply Caron’s attempt to stay relevant and attract the youthful buyer by reaching for ‘generic’ materials and accords. I feel differently now, having really come to appreciate the subtler nuances as well as the ingredient quality of what I now consider a favourite of my Autumn-Winter rotation. I have to say though that if I hadn’t purchased the bottle and spent time with it in a variety of situations, I would not have had to ‘listen’ to this composition more closely through many full wearings and a bit of bottle maturation as well. As it is, I’ve come to love it. My wife (who has more refined tastes than me) loves the sillage, so I’m grateful for that too. A winner in my book.

    1. Oh dear, ‘too’ not ‘to.’ ‘European seller’, not ‘European.’ Just enthusiastic I guess.

I love hearing from my readers, so please feel free to write a comment or ask a question.
