For instance, Bjork’s 2001 release, Vespertine, resonates very strongly with Christine Nagel’s Archives 69 for État Libre d’Orange. In many ways, the tracks in this collection are amongst the Icelandic singer’s most ‘crystalline’. Brittle. Cool. Piercing. But pairing them with the ELDO scent – with its base of musks and patchouli – brings out a very real warmth: a palpable sense of physicality, of blood pumping through veins. By the same token, the cerebral quality of the music emphasises the haughty aspects of Archives 69, with its chilly use of aldehydes and its curiously sub-zero treatment of pepper. Both pieces of work are celestial and earthy at the same time.
I am melodiously delighted to announce that the latest issue of the Perfume Society’s award-winning Scented Letter contains an article by yours truly on the subject of perfume and music. Which scents are enhanced by which pieces of music? What have I paired with Madonna’s Ray Of Light? Which album fits snugly into the experience of wearing Guerlain L’Heure Bleue? To find out, please visit the Perfume Society’s site and find out how you can get your hands on the magazine.
