Thierry Mugler Alien Man Fusion Review 2019 perfume critic Persolaise

As I sprayed this first flanker in the Alien Man range, my heart sank — I wondered if I was about to embark on one of those days when being a perfume critic entails spending hours apologising for coming across as some kind of lumbering, sub-verbal ape. The crass woods, citruses and leathers of the original Alien Man pushed themselves to the fore, doing little more than remind me of the high hopes we had for this rare example of a masculine scent from Mugler. I’m pleased to report that, as time passed, proceedings moved a little way along the evolutionary ladder, thanks largely to the inclusion of the ‘twist’ note in this composition: coffee. As though taking a page from his own wonderful Hot Cologne for the brand, Jean-Christophe Herault has used the fuzzy, roasted bitterness of George Clooney’s favourite brew to salvage something worthwhile from what was, by most accounts, a disappointing release. Alien Man Fusion doesn’t quite make up for its parent – and it’s unlikely to earn major critical plaudits –  but in a morass of morons, there’s no question that it’s capable of pulling its knuckles away from the pavement, straightening its back and stringing together a coherent sentence. A feat to be applauded.
