When I ask perfumers what is the one scent they wish they’d created themselves, an answer that comes up with predictable frequency is Serge Lutens Feminite Du Bois. This isn’t surprising. Not only did the composition mark a significant shift in feminine scent styles. It was also downright beautiful. And, to my nose, it remains so. 2022 is the thirtieth anniversary of the release of this classic – originally attributed to Pierre Bourdon and Christopher Sheldrake – so to celebrate the occasion, I devoted a special episode of Love At First Scent to it, in which I also smelt a few precious drops of the original Shiseido version. Here’s a link to the video: 30 years of Serge Lutens Feminite Du Bois. And if you’ve never had the pleasure of encountering this wonder of a perfume, seek it out without delay.
