As promised, over on YouTube the other day, I shared a few thoughts on the new, excruciatingly expensive extraits Guerlain have released under the L’Art & La Matiere banner. The sextet consists of Bergamote Fantastico, Tonka Sarrapia, Iris Pallida, Rose Centifolia, Jasmin Grandiflorum and Vanille Planifolia. Here’s a link to the video: Guerlain Les Extraits Signature review.

It’s difficult to work out what objective this collection is meant to achieve, or which hole in the Guerlain catalogue it’s been designed to fill. As representations of their star materials, these extraits are never anything less than pleasant, but they’re not especially compelling either, perhaps because they offer no surprises or eyebrow-raising moments. Like an example of academy art, they are expertly composed and aesthetically sound, but I doubt we’ll still be talking about them in five years’ time.
