From aquatic egos to intergalactic jungles — there was lots to smell in my latest episode of Love At First Scent, including new releases from Juliette Has A Gun, Gucci and others. Plus, we made time for a masterpiece celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Here’s a link to the video: Juliette Has A Gun Ego Stratis, Gucci A Reason To Love, Givenchy Equivoque, Laboratorio Olfattivo Limone, Marc-Antoine Barrois Encelade, Dior Diorella reviews. For the complete list, with timestamps, please keep scrolling.

Juliette Has A Gun Ego Stratis 2:04
Gucci A Reason To Love 12:13
Givenchy Equivoque 18:13
Laboratorio Olfattivo Limone 24:36
Ginori 1735 Rajathra Palace candle 31:50
Marc-Antoine Barrois Encelade 34:27
Dior Diorella 47:38

Putting aside Diorella (which is a masterpiece – a triumph of balancing luminosity with nocturnal sensuality – but doesn’t exactly count as a new release) as well as Equivoque (to which I’m drawn by my personal taste, for the way it presents spices and woods with haute-couture-style sophsitication), I suppose I have to concede that the most interesting member of the bunch is Quentin Bisch’s Encelade. I find it impossible to wear (it keeps making me think I’ve fallen into a vat of toxic, pre-90s misogyny), but it’s certainly bold and distinctive, from its weird, plasticky-green top note (echoes of the awful fake snow that used to be sprayed on Christmas trees in the 1980s) to its foghorn vetiver (which is so assertive, it would make most man-spreaders blush). It’s as strident as the brand’s previous Ganymede, so I suspect it’ll be equally successful.

Persolaise
