Lost in translation. That was the main thought on my mind while I reviewed the new Serge Lutens La Proie Pour L’Ombre over on YouTube the other day. Thanks to the efforts of my erudite viewers, we just about managed to work out what the name means: a variation on ‘a bird in the hand’, apparently. Convoluted name aside, this isn’t one of Uncle Serge’s finest efforts. As though taking its cue from the superior Santal Majuscule, it presents two massive blocks of heavy-hitting materials (leather and vanilla), with no sense of drama or tension between them. Over a none-too-palatable sandalwood, they just lumber towards their conclusion, seemingly not interested in interacting with each other. Never mind: perhaps all this means is that a better Lutens is just around the corner.
