Sticking around for one decade is quite an achievement in today’s over-saturated, over-accelerated, over-homogenised perfume market. So sticking around for four decades is almost enough to raise a brand to near-legendary status. And sure enough, Goutal (aka Annick Goutal, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year), generates a level of love among scenthusiasts that few companies enjoy. I talked about the brand’s big birthday in a recent episode of Love At First Scent, during which I also took the opportunity to show off the new, limited edition packaging of Eau D’Hadrien and sniff the scent itself: that zest-perfect evocation of lemons, cotton sheets and a very Mediterranean, pre-breakfast laziness. We even managed a quick sniff of Ninfeo Mio and Un Matin D’Orage. Here’s a link: 40 years of Goutal and Eau D’Hadrien review.

  1. I have so much to say about this house-I’ll apologize right now : this could take awhile!

First of all for your new subscribers, pushing you into the dizzying heights on youtube, you should send me a present of that gorgeous box of butterfly bottles! You’ve never shown it to us-thank you so much for sharing it.

There are four fragrances involved in the 40th celebrations: Hadrien, Petite Cherie, Mon perfume Cherie, par Camile (you and Madame Persolaise thought it was like vintage Femme, and it used to come in a gorgeous deep red bottle complete with black silk bow-very different from their other bottles, very beautiful and memorable). And finally Eau de Ciel which is what is tugging at my wallet strings.

I don’t think Ninfio Mio is discontinued. I have its matching candle, which was discontinued, and it’s gorgeous!

My friend wore Hadrien and I had no idea perfume could smell so good. I loved Samsara at that time-just one spritz behind the knees. Harden was something different. Eventually I bought a bottle and loved it so much.

Last year I found a website that had loads of bottles at good prices, and I splurged. Matin d’orage in EDT and EDP (almost two totally different scents, and Camille has identified the EDP as one of her favourites). Mandragora. Duel. Duel and Mandragora combined is a favourite summer scent for me. Hadrien in EDP and EDT. Two bottles of Nuits de Hadrien, since it was discontinued, and both were in those gorgeous deep orange bottles. Nuit Etoilee in EDP and EDT. You get the drift. I’m a fan and since life was short I went for it. I love my collection, and I use them all.

And can we stop and think for a moment-as Annick Goutal was taking treatments for cancer she was still composing perfumes. She was ill and was still determined to make something beautiful that would last. How is that for a manifesto 🙂

And finally – in the Todd Haynes film with Julianne Moore called Far From Heaven-the feminine bottle appeared on her dresser in an opening shot. I love seeing perfumes in movies – makes the characters come alive on a whole other level.

Thank you for all the hours of enjoyment you bring. Thank you for reviewing my probably most favourite house. I hope you have a great week ahead of you.

    1. Many thanks for this wonderful comment, and for the helpful tip about the 40th anniversary bottles.

I remember loving Far From Heaven. I ought to watch it again.

I love hearing from my readers, so please feel free to write a comment or ask a question.
