If it takes a special alignment of the stars to create a classic, then the heavens must have been working extra hard above Hermes HQ in 2006. And their efforts certainly paid off, because that was the year in which the house unveiled Terre, the Jean-Claude Ellena composition which turned out to be one of the most successful masculine scents of all time. To mark the 15th anniversary of this modern classic, I broadcast a special episode of Love At First Scent the other day. Here’s a link: 15 years of Terre D’Hermes.

The analogy with perfect alignment is especially apt in the case of Terre. The concept behind the scent was clear and focussed. The design choices – in terms of the logo and the bottle – were spot-on. The name was superb. The advertising campaign genuinely tied in with and supported the product. And finally, the fragrance itself was excellent, highlighting all of Ellena’s unmatched skills when it comes to imbuing even the heaviest materials with radiance and sophistication. It all came together, in a handful of gorgeous, terracotta-coloured earth.

  1. Terre d Hermes eau intense vetiver …. my husband bought me this scent last year sometime and it was love at first site. I never bothered to discover whether it’s for men, women, unisex, I was just obsessed with the feeling it transformed me into whenever I wore it. I felt beautiful, confident and oh so powerful. Like the Rihanna song, 🎶 Make me feel like I’m the only girl in the world 💃
    I…….LOOOOOVE this scent 😍
