A different video format for today’s post. Last week, I had the pleasure of being talked through the recently re-issued Guerlain L’Art Et La Matiere collection, and I shared the experience live on Instagram. Highlights, if I can use so grand a word, include: the ‘quiz’ the brand will now use to match each customer to their ideal scent; initial thoughts on the latest additions, Santal Pao Rosa and Rose Cherie; the patience of the Guerlain team in the face of my impish unruliness. You can watch the broadcast by clicking on the following link: Guerlain L’Art Et La Matiere 2021 UK launch. I’m assured that you don’t need to have Instagram installed on any device in order to watch the video.
This new look for L’Art Et La Matiere is perhaps the most high-profile change brought about so far by Guerlain’s new CEO, Veronique Courtois (formerly of Dior and Shiseido). Although the look of a bottle is never high on my list of important factors when it comes to perfume, I do think these nouveau-retro flacons are an improvement on the previous version. I’m also pleased that, essentially, the range itself is as we’ve known it and that there’ve been no major culls. The price hike is a nuisance but it was probably inevitable. However, more importantly, it would seem that the noisy arrival of these wares coincides with the rather more muted departure of the Parisiennes. Perhaps Courtois decided it was time the brand had only one ‘exclusive’ collection. Or maybe some updated Parisiennes are on the horizon. I hope the latter turns out to be true.

I’m hoping the Parisiennes get restored to the collection at some point, there were several I really enjoy (Mademoiselle Guerlain, Mon Precieux Nectar, L’Heure de Nuit, Nuit d’Amour). Not to mention the much regretted Iris Ganache and the lost Elixirs Charnels: Oriental Brulant, Gourmand Coquin, Chypre Fatal, etc. The discontinuations are aggravating.
Yes, indeed — discontinuations can be mighty annoying.
Thanks for writing.
