What’s the smell of lava? The team at Acampora haven’t gone for a realistic depiction in Pompeii Red, but it’s hard not to read the scent as an attempt to capture the destructive drama of a huge volcanic eruption. I reviewed the perfume in a recent episode of Love At First Scent. Here’s a link: Acampora Profumi Pompeii Red review.

Hats off to Miguel Matos and Acampora Profumi for not shying away from a touch of weirdness in this piece of work: before the vintage-inflected white florals emerge, there’s a strange, unsettling, part-metallic, part-rotting-fruit note (more marked on paper) that threatens to take over the whole and push it into the realms of the unpalatable. But eventually (after the lava cools?) we’re left with a syrupy, assertive blend of ylang ylang, lilies and subtle animalics. Well worth checking out.
