I’m not sure I fully support the idea of calling perfumers rock stars, but if anyone deserves the moniker, it is without question Antoine Lie. The creator of more than his fair share of modern classics (Secretions Magnifiques, Rien, Tom Of Finland for Etat Libre D’Orange; Armani Code for Armani; Crystal Noir for Versace) as well as all of the scents from Eris and the more recent releases from Les Indemodables was interviewed by yours truly in a recent episode of Love At First Scent. Here’s a link: Antoine Lie live interview.

I could have chatted with Lie for ages; and if the number of questions popping up in the live chat was anything to go by, so could all of you. But unfortunately, an hour was all I had, so I did my best to pack as much into it as possible. We delved into several different aspects of Lie’s work, including the composition of Secretions Magnifiques (there was no way we could avoid discussing it!) as well as Rien, Eris Green Spell, Pharrell Williams Girl and Comme Des Garcons Daphne. Lie also chatted about his admiration of Germaine Cellier, why he considers Jacques Cavallier to be an important modern perfumer and the reasons that prompted him to leave behind the likes of Givaudan and IFF and set himself up as an independent. Hopefully, it won’t be long before he comes back to talk to us again.

  1. […] Finally, I found myself being drawn towards my bottle of Eris Mxxx*. For every foreign trip, I need at least one unashamedly nocturnal piece of work: a dense, smouldering composition that revels in sly debauchery. This time, I decided it would be this 2019 composition by Antoine Lie. An animalic, yet entirely sophisticated leather, it may not have projected through the humidity with as much power as I might have hoped, but it certainly stuck around with impressive tenacity, presenting its delicious purr each time the balmy winds changed direction. (For my interview with brand founder Barbara Herman, please click here. And for my interview with Lie, click here.) […]
