A few months ago, Louis Vuitton added a new scent to the cologne-style collection they started last year. It’s called California Dream; like all the other perfumes in their current range, it was composed by Jacques Cavallier; and I reviewed it in the latest episode of Love At First Scent. Putting aside the potentially thorny issue of this release’s price tag, there’s no denying that it’s a more-than-merely-pleasant entry in the catalogue of modern colognes, the premier example of which remains Mugler Cologne. In other words, it takes the ‘fresh’, citrus aspects of traditional colognes – largely steers away from herbs – and places them on a massive dollop of steamy, humid musks. Here, the unique selling point, such as it is, comes in the form of juicy, syrupy mandarin. Pleasingly sunny.
