For the 112th episode of Love At First Scent, I presented a review of the new Dior Oud Rosewood — another entry in the brand’s ‘exclusive’ range, composed by Francois Demachy. To watch the episode, please click on this link: Dior Oud Rosewood review.

As you’ll discover if you watch the video, I was very taken with this one: the heat and danger of the star materials are convincingly and admirably held back – and perhaps made more elegant? – by the tartness of the raspberry note at the top and the creaminess of the sandalwood in the base. More interestingly, this feels like a quieter, less explosive version of the masterful Leather Oud, which suggests that perhaps the latter is on its way out after all.

For years, I’ve heard rumours that it’s to be discontinued, and yet it hasn’t quite disappeared. As I type these words, it’s still listed on Dior’s UK website, but the press material for Oud Rosewood doesn’t mention it as one of the oud scents in the brand’s Maison Christian Dior collection. If we really do have to lose Leather Oud (which would be a terrible shame, even though the current iteration doesn’t quite have the same sweep of desert dryness as the first one) then Oud Rosewood would make a more-than-acceptable substitute.
