My latest episode of Love At First Scent marked something of a departure from the usual format. I decided to raid my stash of precious samples and go on a trip along the scented avenues of my memory. Cue: lots of talk about the 80s and 90s. To find out more, you can watch the video above or by clicking on this link: best classic perfumes.

These are the scents I covered:

Yes Saint Laurent Opium – a fairly recent extrait and a vintage edt
(at the 6:00 minute mark)
Guy Laroche Drakkar Noir (at the 22:00 minute mark)
Paloma Picasso Minotaure (at the 29:00 minute mark)
Christian Dior Dune (at the 36:00 minute mark)

I hope you’re all safe and well.

  1. I was working in my first oil & gas related job when my employer gave us ‘admin girls’ £25 Harrods voucher for Christmas 1977 – cue a visit to my parents in Surrey & a day out in London with my mum! I must have seen ads for Opium because I headed straight for it & the iconic bottle, with ‘porthole’ through which you could see the liquid, the tassel around the stopper etc captivated me, & lo & behold, it cost exactly £25. Given this was at the time when new perfume launches were relatively few & far between, & usually from long-established companies, & celebrity endorsement/involvement generally (thankfully) was not yet a thing, when I went back to my job & flat in Aberdeen I found my flatmates had also been given ‘posh’ perfume for Christmas. Annie had Madame Rochas, Kim had Rive Gauche & I had my Opium – we were all a mere 20 years old at the time!

      1. I think it was probably my flatmates’ mothers who had the great taste! I related this story on NST some time ago when there was a relevant topic on the site & Robin commented that our flat must have smelled fabulous, which made me chuckle.
