Chanel isn’t the first brand that comes to mind when you think of flankers, but there’s no shortage of them in their range, especially in the Chance collection. The latest one is an eau de parfum of Chance Eau Tendre, which arrives thirteen years after the eau de toilette. I reviewed it in a recent episode of Love At First Scent, which you can find at this link: Chanel Chance Eau Fraiche eau de parfum review.
It could be argued that an eau de parfum of Eau Tendre is a case of missing the point. After all, the flanker’s raison d’etre was to bring an effervescent, citrusy playfulness to the range — an aim best achieved by way of a translucent, weight-free edt. That said, the edp earns its place on this particular wheel of fortune, primarily because it manages to balance its lighter elements (those familiar citruses at the start) with weightier florals and woods in the base. And although a synthetic thinness emerges in the deepest levels of the drydown, it doesn’t detract from the good-natured affability of what has come before.
To be sure, the scent isn’t an example of a greet-the-morning-with-a-zesty-smile kind of fraiche, which is what most people might be after from Eau Tendre. But there is a such a thing as a leave-me-in-peace-because-I’m-feeling-relaxed-and-lazy-after-a-big-lunch type of fraiche, and in that regard, this edp manages to tick all the requisite boxes. Plus, it makes for an interesting, slightly off-kilter masculine.

I’m a big fan of the edt, but feeling rather disappointed by the edp. It feels like they are trying too hard to please the coco mademoiselle fans (I recall you mentioned it has some similarity to the mademoiselle too!), it’s too well rounded and lost the ‘excitement’ element edt has…. It feels like once you grow from a kid into a teenager, your parents starts to ask you to behave like a lady/gentlemen, because you are not a kid anymore. I’m sure many mademoiselle and Chanel diehard fan would buy into it, but maybe not the folks who are happy with the edt.
I do agree that it comes across as a bit less energetic.
Thanks very much for reading.
