We don’t talk enough about Patricia De Nicolai. But thankfully, our silence never appears to have an adverse effect on her. Despite being somewhat under the radar – as far as scented cyberspace is concerned – she continues to release works displaying her characteristic attention to detail and her love of classical codes. The latest, Riviera Verbena, was reviewed in a recent episode of Love At First Scent over on YouTube. Here’s a link: Nicolai Riviera Verbena review.

‘Classical codes’ is especially relevant in the case of this particular composition. Even though it’s ostensibly a ‘light’, summer scent, and therefore could have been loaded with little more than fleeting top notes, it showcases Nicolai’s unflagging insistence that a perfume must never be half-baked. So although the opening is suitably sparkling and luminous (the mint and verbena do a commendable job of capturing the curious mix of energy and slowness peculiar to the Cote D’Azur), it is only the first stage of a story that then moves on to other tones and moods (as conveyed by the surprisingly authoritative patchouli drydown). Extremely well put-together, and charming to wear.
