Another year, another Aqua Allegoria. Except that this really doesn’t qualify as just another year, which is why the arrival of these two AAs from Guerlain comes like a caress of reassurance: a sense that normality isn’t too far away. We can but hope. Both of the new creations – Flora Salvaggia and Nettare Di Sole – were the subject of a recent episode of Love At First Scent, which you can watch at this link: Guerlain Aqua Allegoria Flora Salvaggia and Nettare Di Sole review.
Although few of the modern Allegorias reach the standard set by Herba Fresca and Pamplelune, there’s no question that Guerlain should keep the range alive. There’s a playfulness about some of the scents that suggests they come as something of a relief to the perfumers: an unshackling from the grinding requirement to produce one hit after another.
From this year’s entries, Nettare De Sole is unlikely to stay with us for long. Pleasant though its sweet-floral heart may be, its heavy reliance on shampoo musks pushes it too far into the realms of the familiar. However, Flora Salvaggia may find some fans and last beyond the season. Like a lighter, less acidic version of Hermes Eau De Narcisse Bleu, it places a convincing wildflower accord – visions of Kate Winslet running across summer fields in Sense & Sensibility – over a well-judged, subtly woody base. Worth checking out.
