Episode 85 of Love At First Scent focuses on one of the most surprising releases I’ve had the pleasure of smelling this year: Serge Lutens Des Clous Pour Une Pelure. Maybe Uncle Serge has been in a playful frame of mind lately, because everything about this piece of work – from the colour of the juice to the actual smell that emerges from the bottle – speaks of a winking facetiousness. Lutens’ and Sheldrake‘s track record is pretty strong when they allow their inner child to run free, and this effervescent composition is no exception to that rule. You know the drill: you can watch the video above, or by clicking on this link: Serge Lutens Des Clous Pour Une Pelure review.

  1. Bonjour Im part French part American.
Cloves in French are Clous de Girofle. But clous are metallic nails as well.
Orange peel in French is Pelure d’orange.
Des clous pour une pelure means cloves planted into an orange peel.
I believe it’s an old tradition of making a syrup or a liqueur from cloves, orange peel and sugar left in a tight container. It was way before my generation but it’s something I encountered in the countryside.

  2. This is the second time in so many months I rushed off to burn my ill-gotten $$$ for a blind buy on the strength of your review. The first was Jean Patou Collection Héritage Chaldée (<3!!!!!), the other is the Eau de Politesse travel set including this one. I owe you a few vats of coffee. 😉 My wallet doesn't thank you, but I certainly do! <3

    1. Oh dear… I hope you like them all. What did you make of Chaldee? I just adore it.

I hope all’s well with you.

Oh, and you don’t owe me anything 😉 The support and interaction are worth tons!

  3. You asked for a (native) French speaker, here I am, albeit a bit late to the party ^_^ “Des clous!” is also used to mean “f*** all!” “Pelure” literally means “peel” (as of a potato or orange) and can also be used to speak of a person’s coat or other top garment. French is indeed a many-layered language!

  4. Hello Mr Persolaise I am new to watching your wonderful jubilant articulate reciews. That said I am a little confused as to where I can find the notes you write about the perfums a few hours after you have reviewed them. I have looked here at your website underneath where you said they would be and also under the video on the YouTube channel itself. I really wanted your thoughts in the drydiwn if the Serge Lutens Des Clous etc(can not spell it) recent Orange And Clove perfume that was the incongruous blue colour. But I could not find those notes anywhere. Can you tell me where they are or are they are mysterious as Mr Lutens himself?. Speaking of which why do people mainly yourself refer to him as Uncle Serge???. Anyway thank you for your great work. PS I bought the blue coloured one after your review anyway very intrigued by what it will be like-i expect appalling or transcendent.😂PPS you seem like the Einstein of Scents compared to others who are writing and speaking about the same subject. You really stand out in your superior work.

    1. Nadine, this is too kind —- thank you so much.

Have you found the video description that’s always underneath each video? You usually have to expand it by clicking on something like ‘Read more’ or a little arrow. That’s where you should find the blotter updates.

      1. Ah yes thank you!. Got it. Very helpful. Look another question (and again as I am new maybe I am missing something) I have been trying to find if you have done any shows or review groupings on Citrus or Orange forward scents that may be of note to you.Personally Uncle Serge (love thinking of him that way.😂) with FLEURS D’ORANGER is my all time favourite with SANGUINE MUSKISSIME and old Hermes Eau D’Orange Verte not far behind. I would love to know if you have done them-and if not why pray tell?. Anyway thank you for your help love your work.

          1. Hi Persolaise I saw the Citrus show.Very glad you thought it was a good idea. You did a wonderful job as usual and I now have more glorious cheerful citrus scents on my radar because of you. Thank you!. Nadine
