[Guerlain Jasmin Bonheur review based on a sample provided by the brand in 2023.]

Jasmine isn’t generally considered to be amongst perfumery’s ‘happy’ ingredients. It’s seductive, heady, sensuous, intoxicating, dramatic… but rarely joyful. The new Guerlain Jasmin Bonheur seeks to find the flower’s smile, and by and large, it succeeds. Here’s a link to my recent video review of it, followed, as per usual, by a few more thoughts on the scent: Guerlain Jasmin Bonheur review.

It’s interesting that in order to showcase jasmine’s more cheerful facets, Wasser and Jelk felt they had to look to the past. Jasmin Bonheur‘s translucency and streamlined directness are what mark it out as a modern creation, but its handling of the central floral note (powdery, rosy, slightly sweet) feels as though it has travelled to us from a few decades ago, carrying the spirit of the heartfelt, colourful, relatively abstract bouquets found in Estee Lauder Beautiful and Beyond Paradise. The fruity note at the top (apricot, according to the brand) no doubt helps in this regard, lending the whole a sense of carefree exuberance that makes it one of the most irresistible Guerlains we’ve had for a while.

Sadly, it comes with a hefty price tag. But if you can hunt down a sample, do give it a sniff, and surrender yourself to the iridescent hues of a vividly expressionistic experience.
