Carole, thanks for the comment. And yes, you raise a good point. Because there is so much perfume around, it becomes just another product, as you say. Mind you, all those Britney-like celeb scents have lost TONS of sales lately. Most of them have been discontinued.

And by the way, I much prefer questions to answers 🙂

Carolyn, thanks so much for sharing that wonderful story.

And you know what: that's the third time this week that I've heard of someone really liking Aura. So who knows: maybe Mugler are on to something after all. Maybe their decision to disguise plain old vanilla with *just* the right level of newness will pay off.

I agree the industry really wants to tap into a new bloodline. The under thirty crowd is quite different. When I was a girl I wanted to have a grown up perfume, like my mom's . She wore Je Reviens, and she chose Arpege for me. I always liked the Jennifer Lopez scents-I think JLo gives her customers credit for some intelligence, and I read she was personally involved in the original fragrance. I wonder if the under thirty crowd is jaded because of what has been pushed on them as consumers. I wonder if perfume is just another product to them. If you haven't been trained to really use your nose is there any difference between the Britney Spears scents and the Guerlain classics? Maybe they prefer the casual aspects of the Britney scents-affordable and easy to find.
I have no answer-only more questions, I'm afraid. Thank you for the thoughtful analysis, and have a good weekend 🙂
Sincerely,
Carole

My friend, who I've mentioned here before regarding her relatively newly acquired interest in fragrance after years of accompanying me to specialist shops, mentioned the other week when we were visiting Glasgow that she'd been impressed by a fragrance on a scent strip in a recent magazine, so much so that she'd actually applied it to her wrist. Of course, when I asked her what it was, said said she didn't remember! She finally came up with the name Mugler, so I marched her to Frasers department store & made her sniff all the Muglers on display. She immediately identified Aura as the ne, which surprised me as it's outwith her usual preferences, though she doesn't use fragrance that much anyway. It was her birthday during our trip, so I managed to sneak off while she was shoe shopping & bought her a bottle – she was thrilled, despite having said she didn't want to mark the occasion (I also took her for dinner at a superb restaurant in Glasgow's West End, which she also loved). Bless her, when I sent her the link to a Fragrantica article about the new Mugler set-up in a Paris department store, which also described Aura as an 'iconic' fragrance, & about which I commented that she'd done well discovering something so different from her usual, she mailed me back & said she'd had a good teacher.
